Nokota
Stallions

Nokota horses are bred directly
from the war and buffalo horses confiscated from Chief Sitting Bull in the late
1800’s. The Nokota qualities will enhance other breeds with their keen
intelligence and calm, curious disposition. They are large-boned with thick hoof
walls, rarely needing to be shod. The Nokota make excellent barrel and pole
racing horses. These Indian horses are better balanced on to their hind quarters
than most breeds which gives them uncanny jumping ability. They have unexpected
strength and endurance for their size making them ideal mountain and trail
horses. Nokotas exhibit the smooth “Indian shuffle”, a gait desired by many.
Greys and blacks are the most common Nokota colors.
The Nokota is the last remaining strain of the northern prairie horse, and the
last known strain of Native American war and buffalo horses. We still marvel at
what Indians could accomplish with these breeds. Never stabled, washed, curried,
shod, doctored or fed, they starved through the winter, but when the grass came
in he filled out, ears up and eyes brightened, ready for whatever his master
required. Adversity brought out these outstanding inheritable characteristics
sought after by all breeders.
